Hookah Pipes

Hookah pipes have been in use for about 400 years. They were originally invented by an Indian doctor and used in the far east. In the 90s they started to grow in popularity and began to spread across the globe. They eventually made it to the United States, where they have become very popular in recent years.

What is Hookah?Hookah

A hookah is a type of water pipe that is used to smoke flavored and often sweetened tobacco. It is known by many names across the world such as narghile, argileh, shisha, and goza.

Hookah pipes come in small, medium, and large, and are made in a wide variety of styles. They are comprised of a hose with a mouthpiece on one end, a water jar, a bowl, and a stem which connects the bowl to the water jar.

Hookah tobacco is often referred to in the US as shisha and is usually a mix of tobacco, molasses, and fruit. Many times other flavors are added such as coconut, mint, or coffee.

Hookah is often a social activity in the US and is commonly engaged in by couples or groups of friends.

How Hookah Works

While hookah pipes may look complicated and fancy on the outside, the way they work is actually pretty simple.

The bowl of the pipe is what contains the tobacco. It also contains burning charcoal, which is separated from the tobacco by perforated aluminum foil. As the charcoal begins to heat the tobacco, smoke is created. When people suck on the hose of the Hookah, the smoke is drawn through the water in the water jar. As the smoke passes through the water it is filtered and cooled. It then travels through the hose and is inhaled.

Types of Hookahs

There are two main types of hookahs, modern and traditional. They work the same way, but they differ in design, materials, price, and finish.

Modern Hookahs

Modern hookahs are typically made in Chinese factories using the latest manufacturing techniques. This gives them a sleek, uniform look. Some of the less expensive ones are made of anodized aluminum. Others are made from glass and stainless steel, and have brass cores. Most of the time they are going to be lighter in weight than traditional hookahs, and they do not have visible weld lines.

One of the benefits of modern hookahs is that they are usually built out of threaded components that can be easily screwed together. This makes them easy to put into a carrying case and transport. Also, some of the more expensive modern hookahs have better finish work than traditional hookahs due to advanced new materials and production techniques.

Traditional Hookahs

Traditional hookahs are usually made in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, or other middle eastern countries. They are handmade from glass and a combination of different metals such as stainless steel, copper, and brass. The weld points are visible, and the finish is not as flawless as some of the modern hookahs, but each one is a unique work of art. Often times the hookah makers in these countries have been practicing their craft for generations. Traditional hookahs will often contain patterns or designs that are unique to the history of the region in which they were created.

Traditional hookahs tend to smoke better than modern hookahs, although this is not always the case. They usually have one central tube that runs the full length of the stem, and the tubing is generally wider than that on a modern hookah. This allows the smoke to be drawn more easily.
